We branded an airline with the rhythm and color of a nation
Cabo Verde is a small island nation of ten volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa. Icelandair acquired a stake in TACV, their shuttered national airline with the goal of creating a hub-and-spoke airline that connected North America, Africa, South America and Europe. In addition to shuttling business travelers across continents, they wanted to introduce Cabo Verde as an island tourism destination.
Tasked with relaunching a national airline and introducing a new tourism destination to the world, we drew inspiration from the collision of joyful sounds and vibrant colors that mimic their complex history, which we called “Rhythm & Color.” The funky grid was inspired by the rhythm of native Morna music and the patterns created by the brightly colored narrow buildings of the capital city Praia. The non-proportional typography is an elevation of the traditional hand-painted signage. The dynamic and freestyle color palette was inspired by the cool tones of Sal’s beaches, the bright colors of the city and tropical wildlife from across the islands.
The brand was incubated in 2017-2018, but delayed due to contract negotiations. Final production was completed with the launch of the Airline under Icelandair’s stewardship in early 2019.
